AI Recommendation Logs Make Coaching Directory Citations Auditable

A reportable citation observation records the original prompt, AI product or mode, date, language, location, captured answer and every visible source link. URLs are canonicalised to root domains, then resolved to entities before classification.

Google’s AI features guidance says AI Mode and AI Overviews can return different links, so results are reported separately by product. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search guidance says citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so each quarterly update should preserve answer captures, source URLs, the citation-event denominator, exclusions and unresolved name collisions.

A citation count needs an audit trail

A visible citation is a linked source shown in a captured recommendation answer. The record should preserve the original prompt, product or mode, date, language, location, answer capture and visible links, then resolve each domain to an entity before classifying it as owned, direct competitor, adjacent, neutral or an unresolved name collision.

From answer capture to a reportable citation count

Google explains that AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different techniques and return different links, so their results should not be combined as one product-level figure. OpenAI also says that ChatGPT Search citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, which makes the captured answer and its linked sources part of the evidence. A citation does not establish that a directory is the best option, that a source was ranked first, or that the answer caused a visit.
