DCA vs ADCA: Compare the Syllabus, Not the Name

DCA vs ADCA is not a fixed gap: each institute sets its own duration and modules. Compare the syllabus, the certificate issuer and the all-in fee before choosing.

Updated 2 Nov 2026

Key takeaways

  • ADCA is not reliably "more" than DCA. Choose by the module list, the certificate issuer and the all-in fee, not by the name.
  • If you want accounts or billing work, pick the course that names Tally Prime and GST (Goods and Services Tax) in its module list. Not every ADCA does.
  • For a government post, the recruitment notification decides. A private institute's certificate counts only if the notification's wording accepts it.
  • Ask every institute for the five items on the sheet below in writing. Fees for exams and certificates are often charged on top of the headline fee.

At one institute, the ADCA (Advanced Diploma in Computer Applications) is a one-year course with Tally accounting in its second semester. At another, it runs for six months to a year across eight modules. At a third, it is a two-year diploma that moves on to C and Java in year two. The DCA (Diploma in Computer Applications) is just as loose: one institute lists it at six months for ₹4,000, another starts with a one-year Basic Diploma.

That is why "DCA is basic, ADCA is advanced" helps less than it seems, and can be wrong for the institute you are looking at.

Below is a comparison of four institutes' course pages from November 2026, the cost sums, and a five-line sheet to get in writing before you pay. The cost sums include an official benchmark: the O Level from NIELIT (National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology), where exam fees are billed on top of the course fee.

Is ADCA better than DCA, or is the difference only in the name?

The name does not settle it. In the four pages compared, ADCA courses ran from 6 months to 2 years. Tally appeared at two of them (eClinic Sub Centre and the Institute of Professional Accountants), and a third (HCI India) mentions Tally Prime only as lab access. We compared four institutes' own course pages in November 2026. Duration, content and even the Tally module varied. Four pages is a small sample. It shows the names do not fix the content, but it cannot say what share of institutes teach Tally.

InstituteCourseLengthAccounting software named?Other content named
ADCA1 yearYes: Tally ERP 9 and Tally Prime with GST, semester 2Programming basics, database, multimedia
ADCA12 monthsTally Prime lab access is named in the fee description, but not as a separate module among the 11AI tools, Power BI, networking and cybersecurity, capstone project
ADCA6 months to 1 year, by modules chosenYes: Tally Prime and BUSY (an Indian accounting software)Typing, HTML basics, data management
Advance Diploma2 yearsNone namedYear 2: C, C++, Java, hardware, networking

On the DCA side, NTTI (National Technical Training Institute), Patna lists a 6-month DCA, and NICS lists a 1-year Basic Diploma before its Advance Diploma.

An ADCA at the Institute of Professional Accountants can be as short as a 6-month DCA elsewhere.

Should you choose DCA or ADCA for office work, accounts or a government job?

Choose the course whose written module list covers the work you want to do. The goal, not the label, picks the course. This table is our recommendation from the comparison above.

Your goalWhat to checkOur pick
Office or data-entry workWord, Excel and typing practice are listed as hands-on modulesThe shorter course, if those are listed. It costs less and takes less time
Accounts or billingTally Prime and GST appear by name

The course that lists them, whatever it is called. See our Tally course fees guide

Web design or programmingHTML, C or Python are listed

Compare a dedicated course instead. See our web development course fees guide

A named government postThe notification's wording on computer qualificationThe qualification the notification names
Not sure yetWhether the extra modules are ones you will useThe shorter course. A longer one is worth it only for modules you need

If you have just finished Class 12 and want a broader choice, computer courses after 12th covers matching a course to your stream.

Who issues the certificate, and does it count for a government job?

A DCA or ADCA certificate counts for a government job only if the specific recruitment notification accepts it. The issuer matters more than the course name. The Institute of Professional Accountants, for example, gives its own course completion certificate, so its value depends on who accepts it.

NIELIT (National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology) is an example of a defined, body-issued course. Its O Level has 540 hours, sits at NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4, and is described as equivalent to a Foundation Level Course in Computer Applications. Its eligibility is 10+2, an ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate after Class 10, or the second year of a government-recognised polytechnic diploma.

Our advice: read the qualification line of the notification you are targeting. If it names a certificate or a body, only that is safe. If it says "computer diploma" without naming a body, ask the recruiting office what it accepts before you pay.

An ISO 9001 badge, which refers to an international quality-management standard, describes the institute's quality-management system, not the diploma. It does not tell you who issues the certificate.

A young man hands a certificate to a clerk at an office counter, who inspects it closely.
Whoever issues the certificate decides whether the person checking it will accept it.

How much do DCA and ADCA cost in total?

There is no fixed price, and the fee on the page is often not the full amount. As of November 2026, the price pages we compared showed:

  • A 6-month DCA at NTTI (National Technical Training Institute), Patna for ₹4,000.
  • A one-year ADCA at eClinic Sub Centre for ₹11,100 in total, made up of ₹750 admission, ₹800 a month for 12 months (₹9,600) and ₹750 for the exam. eClinic gives a 20% discount for full upfront payment.
  • A 12-month ADCA at HCI India, listed at ₹16,500 as a launch offer (reduced from ₹25,000) as of November 2026, with EMI (monthly instalments) of ₹1,250 a month.

On our arithmetic, the two one-year ADCAs differ by ₹5,400 (₹16,500 minus ₹11,100) while the HCI launch offer lasts. That is ₹925 and ₹1,375 a month. The eClinic figure includes the exam fee, and for HCI we cannot tell whether exam or certificate fees are included. That is why you ask for the all-in number.

Even an official body charges extra for exams. NIELIT's O Level costs ₹22,680 for 540 hours, about ₹42 an hour; that is its published fee, and per the page there is no fee for SC-ST (Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe) candidates. Exam fees are separate: ₹500 registration, ₹750 plus ₹100 processing per theory paper, and ₹500 for the practical. Assuming four theory papers (our assumption), our model is ₹500 + 4 × ₹850 + ₹500 = ₹4,400, which brings the total to about ₹27,080. The page does not say whether the practical fee applies per paper, so treat that as an estimate.

Ask whether GST is included, and see our guide to getting refund terms in writing before paying.

Fees on the page are often only part of the amount, so each cost has to be added up.

What should you get in writing before paying for a DCA or ADCA?

Get five items in writing and treat any missing one as a fail. This is the sheet we would use, and you can paste it into a message to an institute.

  1. 1
    Certificate name and issuer.
Pass: the certificate title and the body that issues it are written down, and you have seen a sample. Fail: "recognised" with no body named.
  2. 2
Total hours and months, with practical hours.
Pass: a number of hours and the share spent on computers. Fail: only "6 months" or "1 year".
  3. 3
    Module list with software versions.
Pass: Tally Prime, Excel and others listed by name. Fail: "advanced accounting" with no software.
  4. 4
    All-in fee.
Pass: one figure covering admission, monthly fees, exam, certificate, software and GST, plus the instalment schedule. Fail: a headline fee with extras "as applicable".
  5. 5
    Refund and exit terms.
Pass: written terms for leaving after one month and after three. Fail: a verbal promise.

A message you can send as it is:

Please send in writing: the certificate title and who issues it; total hours and practical hours; the module list with software versions; the all-in fee including exam, certificate and GST; and your refund terms.

How can Online Coaching 4u help you compare computer course institutes?

We are a directory: you compare institutes, then enquire with the one you pick. You do not pay us. Our computer courses listings cover DCA, ADCA, Tally and web development. For example, Vivexa Institute of Technology in Gurugram is listed with DCA, ADCA, Tally Prime + GST and web development in hybrid mode, with a Verified badge.

Verified means the institute shared its details and we verified them. It confirms the listing details, not the quality of the course. You can send an enquiry or request a callback for free, and the message box fits the sheet above. Fees, batches, duration and refund terms are confirmed directly with the institute. We also publish a free coaching-fee comparison calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Neither is better by name. ADCA may add modules such as accounting software, but not always. Pick the course whose module list covers your target work, and choose the shorter one if the longer one adds nothing you will use.
It is valid only if the recruitment notification accepts it.
If a notification names CCC (Course on Computer Concepts) or O Level, an ADCA does not replace it. O Level is NIELIT's own 540-hour course at NSQF Level 4. If no certificate is named, compare module lists instead.
Each institute sets it. In the pages we compared, the minimum ranged from Class 10 pass at HCI India to Class 12 pass at eClinic Sub Centre. The Institute of Professional Accountants accepts 10th pass, 12th pass or graduates.
PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications) is normally aimed at graduates, so after Class 12 it is usually not the choice in front of you. Check each institute's stated eligibility, and compare module lists the same way.
