The short answer
Choose by rules, not reputation. SBI is one employer with a stated ₹2 lakh, three-year bond, while IBPS feeds 11 public sector banks and you rank your bank preferences. The Mains sections carry the same marks in both exams; the difference is where you can be eliminated.

Introduction
Both exams lead to an officer-grade bank job on the same basic pay scale, so asking which is better gets you nowhere. The useful question is which set of rules you can live with.
The 2026 notices from State Bank of India (SBI) and the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) differ on five points: seats, the age floor, the bond, the cut-offs that can end your attempt, and the weight of the final stage in merit. As of November 2026, applications for both 2026 recruitments have closed. The rules below come from the 2026 notices, which are the best guide to the next cycle but may change.
We publish this page. Online Coaching 4u is a coaching directory, not a recruiter or a coaching provider, so we have no seat to sell in either exam. Below you will find a side-by-side table, seat counts, pay, bank choice, where each exam can eliminate you, a decision table by situation, and how we shortlist coaching once you have chosen.
Key takeaways
- Choose by rules, not reputation. SBI is one employer with a stated ₹2 lakh, three-year bond. IBPS feeds 11 public sector banks, and you rank your bank preferences.
- As of November 2026, the IBPS notice lists 7,565 indicative vacancies against SBI's 1,500, about five times as many.
- Both Main examination (Mains) papers carry the same section marks (60, 60, 60, 20). The difference is where you can be eliminated: IBPS has a cut-off in each Preliminary examination (Prelims) test, and SBI has none in Prelims.
- Choose between them only when age, bond or bank choice forces the decision.
How do SBI PO and IBPS PO compare side by side in 2026?
They are two separate recruitments with the same basic scale and different rules. In SBI's 2026 advertisement, a Probationary Officer (PO) joins State Bank of India alone. In IBPS's 2026 common recruitment (Common Recruitment Process, CRP PO/MT-XVI), a Probationary Officer or Management Trainee (PO/MT) is allotted to one of 11 participating banks. The tables on this page use the same labels for both.
SC/ST means Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, OBC means Other Backward Classes and PwBD means persons with benchmark disabilities.
Details are in the SBI advertisement and the IBPS notification.
How many more seats does IBPS PO offer than SBI PO?
IBPS PO/MT shows about five times SBI's seats. IBPS lists 7,565 indicative vacancies across ten reporting banks in its annexure of 27 August 2026. SBI's advertisement lists 1,500. Our arithmetic: 7,565 ÷ 1,500 = 5.04.
Seats are split unevenly. Bank of Baroda alone shows 1,900, more than SBI's whole intake. Canara Bank shows 1,500, equal to SBI's. Union Bank of India is marked "Not Reported", so the true total may differ. IBPS calls all its figures indicative, and allotment follows the vacancies banks actually report.
SBI's notice also shows how narrow its funnel is. It shortlists roughly 10 times the vacancies for Mains and up to about 3 times for the final stage. On 1,500 vacancies, that is roughly 15,000 for Mains and 4,500 for the final stage (our arithmetic on SBI's ratios). IBPS sets no such ratios, so you cannot build the same funnel for it.
More seats do not equal better odds. Neither notice publishes how many people apply, so a seat count cannot tell you your chance.
Why does the SBI PO starting pay look higher on the same scale?
SBI's starting pay looks higher because SBI states four advance increments on top of the ₹48,480 basic. Both notices give the same scale: ₹48,480 rising in stages to ₹85,920. SBI adds "plus 4 advance increments".
If each advance increment is one ₹2,000 stage of the scale, the effective starting basic is ₹48,480 + 4 × ₹2,000 = ₹56,480 (our arithmetic, not a figure printed in the notice). SBI also gives an approximate cost to company (CTC, the total yearly package) of ₹21.97 lakh at its Mumbai centre, and lists dearness allowance, house rent allowance, pension contribution under the National Pension System, leave fare concession, medical and lease rental benefits.
IBPS states the same basic scale and says allowances follow "the rules of the Participating Bank". Your allowances therefore depend on which bank you are allotted.
Our recommendation: do not compare in-hand figures from articles. Compare the notice text, and ask the allotted bank for its salary structure before you accept an IBPS offer.
Can you choose your bank or posting in SBI PO and IBPS PO?
In IBPS PO/MT you rank bank preferences, and you cannot choose your posting. In SBI PO you do neither. IBPS allots candidates to a participating bank by merit-cum-preference. Once allotment is made, "no request for change shall be entertained", and refusing the offer forfeits your candidature. IBPS describes the post as an all-India cadre where you "may be posted anywhere in India/outside India" at the bank's discretion.
SBI is a single employer. Its advertisement says selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India. It reserves the right to allot or transfer you to any circle or office, or to depute you to an associate, subsidiary or other organisation. It adds that requests for a specific place "may not be entertained".
So IBPS gives you a say in the employer. Neither exam gives you a say in the city.
Which exam is tougher, and where can each one eliminate you?
Neither notice makes one paper harder; they differ in where you can be eliminated. We would judge difficulty by your weakest section, not by the exam's name.
- Prelims. IBPS requires a minimum cut-off in each of its three tests, so one weak section can end your attempt even with a strong total. SBI has no sectional cut-off in Prelims.
- Mains. Both exams run the same four objective sections at the same marks. SBI folds computer aptitude into Reasoning and gives General Awareness 60 questions. IBPS lists digital and financial awareness, including Reserve Bank of India (RBI) circulars, and gives it 50 questions. In SBI's Mains, each test and the descriptive paper has its own minimum qualifying score, and each wrong answer costs one quarter of the question's marks.
- Final stage. SBI adds a psychometric test and a Group Exercise before the interview, and these carry 25% of final merit. IBPS's interview carries 20% and needs at least 40% marks (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates).
Prelims marks do not count toward final merit in SBI's notice. Treat Prelims as a gate, and put your depth into Mains.
Which should you target? A decision table by situation
Pick the exam your situation forces, and prepare for both when nothing does. The table applies the 2026 notices' rules as of November 2026; the next cycle's notices may change them.
In 2026 the SBI registration window (18 June to 8 July) overlapped the IBPS one, which opened on 1 July. IBPS's calendar listed Prelims for 22 and 23 August 2026. One plan has to carry both.
Which mistakes make aspirants pick the wrong exam?
Aspirants most often choose on pay quoted in an article instead of the notice. Check the scale against the notice: ₹48,480 is the 2026 figure for both exams.

How do you shortlist bank coaching for SBI PO and IBPS PO?
We recommend our free directory for building a bank-coaching shortlist before you pay anyone. Our listings cover Banking among the exams, and you can browse by exam, city, study mode and verification status. Students can browse, compare institutes, send enquiries and submit reviews without paying us. We do not teach courses, run classes or take course payments; you deal with the institute directly.
Here is how to run the shortlist:
- Filter first. Open our Coaching Directory and pick Banking. Add your city or online mode.
- Check the rating source. Pass: the profile shows reviews collected by Online Coaching 4u and any Google rating as separate figures, with the source named. Fail: a single blended rating with no source.
- Test the course against the notice. The course must name SBI PO and IBPS PO separately. It should cover SBI's psychometric test and Group Exercise. It should cover IBPS's per-test Prelims cut-off and its 25-mark descriptive paper.
- Get the money terms in writing. Fees, batches, faculty, duration and refund terms come from the institute, not from us. Use our refund-terms guide and our bank exam coaching guide before paying.
A Verified badge on our listings means the institute shared its details and we checked them. Verified means confirmed details, not a guarantee of selection.
Our verdict
Choose between them only when age, bond or bank choice forces the decision.
How we compared
We compared the 2026 SBI PO advertisement with the IBPS CRP PO/MT-XVI detailed notification, its updated vacancy annexure and corrigendum, and the IBPS 2026-27 calendar, as of November 2026. Applications for both 2026 recruitments have closed, so the rules are the best guide to the next cycle but may change. We did not compare in-hand salary, since IBPS allowances follow the allotted bank.
