CAPM vs PMP in India: Check PMP Eligibility Before You Pay for CAPM

CAPM vs PMP depends on eligibility: take PMP if you can document 24 to 60 months of leading projects, by education level, and take CAPM only as a bridge if you cannot.

Updated 4 Oct 2026

A woman at a desk by a window goes through a checklist and notebook beside her laptop and a stack of project folders.

Key takeaways

  • Take PMP directly if you can document 36 months (bachelor's degree), 48 months (associate degree or diploma) or 60 months (school only) of leading projects within the last 10 years, or 24 months with a degree from a PMI-accredited programme. CAPM is not a prerequisite for PMP.
  • If you cannot yet, CAPM is a sensible bridge. It needs no experience, and PMI says an active CAPM covers all 35 hours of PMP training. CAPM lasts three years, so apply for PMP while it is active.
  • Going CAPM first adds one exam fee: ₹21,679 for a PMI member or ₹28,905 for a non-member, before course fees, tax and card charges (our model, at ₹96.35 per US$1 on 4 October 2026).
  • Before paying for either certificate, count how many of ten current ads for your target role name PMP, CAPM or neither. Your own count beats any national average.

In the Project Management Institute (PMI) Earning Power survey, the median PMP holder in India reported $30,525 a year, against $22,894 for non-certified peers, a gap of 33.3% (PMI, Earning Power, 14th edition).

That gap is why many people start with the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), the entry credential. It is also why many pay for it when they did not need to. The Project Management Professional (PMP) is gated by documented experience of leading projects, while CAPM needs only coursework. If you already qualify for PMP, CAPM is a second exam fee for a credential PMI does not require.

If you are early in your career, often in IT or operations, and unsure whether your years count, this page gives you a four-test eligibility check, a decision table, the 2026 rule changes, a rupee cost model and the questions to put to a training provider.

CAPM vs PMP: which certificate should you take first?

Take PMP first if you can document enough months of leading projects, and CAPM first only if you cannot. CAPM tests what you know about project management and needs no project experience. PMP tests whether you have led projects. PMI, which runs both, gates PMP on documented experience.

Your situationTake

You lead projects but are short of monthsKeep logging months. Take CAPM only if you want a credential meanwhile and the 35 training hours covered
You work inside others' projects (testing, coding, support)Neither yet. Get a lead role on a project first
Your target employer names PMP in its adsThe PMP route, however you reach eligibility

Can you apply for the PMP exam today? Four tests

You can apply for PMP once you pass tests 1 to 3 and add the 35 hours of training in test 4. The tests follow the requirements on PMI's PMP certification page. Run them in order and write your answers down.

Test 1: Does your education match the months of experience PMI asks for?

Pass if your documented months of leading projects reach the figure for your education. Fail if they fall short.

A man goes through a printed project history sheet with a pen beside folders and a planner.
Writing out your leading-project months before applying shows whether you already pass the experience test.
Your educationMonths of leading projects PMI requires
Secondary school diploma or certificate60 (5 years)
Associate degree or vocational/trade school diploma48 (4 years)
Bachelor's degree or higher36 (3 years)
Degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) programme24 (2 years)

Test 2: Were you leading the projects, or working inside them?

PMI counts time spent taking responsibility for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes. Pass if, for every project on your list, you can write down a named outcome, the decisions you owned, the start and end dates, and a person who can confirm your role. Fail if any project lacks one of the four. A developer, tester or analyst who has never run a project, workstream or release will usually fail this test, however many years they have worked.

Test 3: Do your months fall inside the last 10 years without overlaps?

Pass if the total of non-overlapping months inside the last 10 years reaches your figure from test 1. PMI does not let you double-count overlapping projects.

Example: one project ran January to December 2024 (12 months) and another ran July 2024 to June 2025 (12 months). Together they cover January 2024 to June 2025, which is 18 months, not 24.

Test 4: Can you reach 35 hours of project management training?

Pass if you can show a course of 35 hours or an active CAPM. PMI states: "An active CAPM certification also fulfills PMP training requirements." Failing this test is the cheapest to fix, because a course can be bought.

Reading your result: pass tests 1 to 3 and you are eligible once you add the 35 hours. Fail any of tests 1 to 3 and only more months of real project leadership will fix it. CAPM can cover the training requirement while you build them.

What changed in 2026 for the PMP exam and its training hours?

PMI launched a new PMP exam on 9 July 2026, and all exams on or after that date use it (PMI new-exam page). As of 9 July 2026, an associate degree or equivalent qualification needs 48 months, and the experience window is 10 years (previously 8).

  • Training hours: as of 4 October 2026, PMI will restrict live PMP classes to approved partners from 1 December 2026. Live hours then count only from a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP), a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited academic programme. Self-paced courses are unaffected.
  • Exam delivery: you sit PMP at a Pearson VUE (PMI's exam-testing provider) centre or securely online, and may take it up to three times in one year.

What does the CAPM-then-PMP route cost compared with going straight to PMP?

CAPM first adds one exam fee: ₹21,679 as a PMI member or ₹28,905 as a non-member, before course fees. The full difference is the CAPM exam fee plus the gap between the CAPM and PMP course prices. This is our model, not a PMI figure.

As of October 2026, PMI lists CAPM exam fees of US$225 for members and US$300 for non-members (PMI CAPM page), and PMP fees of US$445 and US$675 (PMI PMP page). We convert at ₹96.35 per US$1, the rate on 4 October 2026 (open.er-api.com), and assume annual PMI membership of US$139 to US$159.

Route (exam fees only)US$₹ at 96.35
PMP directly, non-member67565,036
PMP directly, member (445 + membership)584 to 60456,268 to 58,195
CAPM then PMP, member (225 + 445 + membership)809 to 82977,947 to 79,874
CAPM then PMP, non-member (300 + 675)97593,941

Working: 225 × 96.35 = ₹21,679 and 300 × 96.35 = ₹28,905, which is the gap between the rows above.

  • Route A (PMP directly) = 35-hour course + PMP exam fee.
  • Route B (CAPM first) = 23-hour CAPM course + CAPM exam fee + PMP exam fee. No second course is needed, because an active CAPM covers the 35 hours.

Ask three providers for both a 23-hour and a 35-hour quote, then put them into the formula. Our coaching fee comparison calculator lines quotes up side by side.

Membership: it saves US$230 on the PMP fee (675 − 445), more than the US$139 to US$159 it costs. On CAPM alone it saves US$75 (300 − 225), less than it costs. Join once, and only if PMP is the plan.

One more point: PMI says an "active" CAPM covers the training hours, and CAPM lasts three years. If PMP is more than three years away, a 35-hour course bought nearer the date may suit you better.

Does a PMP raise pay in India?

Yes, on PMI's own survey data, though part of the gap is seniority. In the 14th edition (November 2025), the median PMP holder in India reports $30,525 against $22,894 for non-certified respondents. That is 33.3% higher: (30,525 − 22,894) ÷ 22,894 = 0.333. The survey covers 577 self-reporting Indian practitioners, and PMI reports salaries in US dollars (PMI Earning Power, 14th edition).

By how long the certificate has been held, India's PMP medians are $27,003 (under five years), $38,215 (five to ten years) and $46,961 (ten years or more). Tenure rises with career length, so our reading is that the gap reflects experience as well as the certificate.

Why does buying CAPM first often not lead to a project manager role?

CAPM proves knowledge, while most project-manager ads also ask for years of experience. A certificate bought before the experience exists does not close that gap.

Our view: CAPM can help you get shortlisted for junior roles such as project coordinator or PMO (project management office) analyst, where it works as a tie-breaker. It will not by itself open a project-manager post. If you are short of PMP months, spend your first effort on a lead role. Ask to run a small project, workstream or release at work, and document it as you go. Then decide whether CAPM adds anything.

How do you check which certificate employers in your target role ask for?

Open ten current ads for the exact role and city you want, search each for PMP, CAPM, PRINCE2 and "years", and count the mentions. Employer wording differs by role and city, so a count for your own target beats any national average.

  1. Open 10 current ads on a job board for your target title and city.
  2. Search each page for PMP, CAPM, PRINCE2 and "years".
  3. Note which ads name each, and the lowest years of experience asked.

If most of the ten ads ask for PMP, plan for PMP. If CAPM appears in junior-role ads, treat it as optional, not as a requirement. If CAPM is your bridge, remember it lasts three years, so apply for PMP while it is active.

How do you choose a PMP or CAPM training provider?

Choose a provider that can prove the hours PMI will accept, and get its fee and refund terms in writing before you pay. Four tests, each with a pass or fail:

  1. Is it a PMI Authorized Training Partner? Pass: you find the provider in PMI's Authorized Training Partner directory. Fail: it cannot give you an ATP identifier.
  2. Does the certificate state the hours? Pass: it states at least 23 contact hours for CAPM or 35 hours for PMP, in writing.
  3. Which exam outline does the course follow? Pass for PMP: it names the current outline (People 33%, process 41%, business environment 26%). Fail: it cannot say.
  4. Are the fee and refund terms written down? Pass: the quote lists what the fee includes and the exit terms. Our guide to checking a coaching refund policy shows what to look for.

We publish this page and list PMP and CAPM training providers in our directory. Nothing above depends on which provider you choose, or on whether you use us at all.

Frequently asked questions

No. PMP needs documented months of leading projects, 36 months with a bachelor's degree within the last 10 years. A fresher can take CAPM, which needs a high school diploma or equivalent and 23 hours of project management education (PMI).

Usually not yet. With a bachelor's degree PMI asks for 36 months of leading projects, and 24 months only if your degree is from a PMI Global Accreditation Center programme. Time spent working inside someone else's project plan does not count as leading (PMI).

PMP is better for most Indian project-management jobs, in our view. It is the more widely recognised global credential, while PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a UK-origin method used mostly in government and consulting. Count PMP and PRINCE2 mentions in ten ads for your role.

No. As of October 2026, 60 PDUs every three years keep both active. CAPM alone needs 15 PDUs and PMP needs 60, but PDUs earned for PMP count toward the CAPM requirement too, so holding both needs no extra 15 (PMI).

Yes. PMI offers the PMP exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or securely online. For the online option, PMI asks you to run a system test, choose a private space and have a valid photo ID ready (PMI).
