AI Course for Beginners: Start Free, Check Before You Pay
For an AI course for beginners, start with a short free or free-to-try one, then pay only if a written check of the total fee, refund terms and placement claims passes.
Updated 14 Oct 2026

Key takeaways
- Start with a free or free-to-audit course, and check the price of any certificate before you enrol.
- Among the five providers we checked in October 2026, costs ran from free to ₹2,84,995 plus GST; ask for the all-in rupee total before you compare.
- A placement promise in an advert is not a guarantee: put it in the signed agreement, with the refund that follows if it fails.
- Eight written checks (total fee, refund, live hours, certificate, prerequisites, syllabus date, placement terms, outside reviews) separate a sound paid course from a risky one.

A beginner's first AI course can be free at one provider, while another charges lakhs of rupees for a single day of instructor-led training. The difficulty is knowing which of those you need.
Demand for a first course is clear: as of October 2026, Coursera's page for AI for Everyone, written for people with no technical background, shows more than 2.6 million learners enrolled (Coursera). Several well-known beginner courses can be started without paying, though certificates are often a separate purchase.
The costly decision comes later, when a brochure ties AI skills to a new job. A headline instalment, or a price before GST (Goods and Services Tax), can differ from the figure on the invoice, so a pre-payment check matters more than the course name.
This page separates the two decisions: which course to try first, and which eight questions to get answered in writing before a paid programme or classroom batch gets your money. We run a directory that helps people compare institutes before they enquire, so the second decision is the one we know best.
Which AI course for beginners should you start with?
Start with a free or free-to-try course that fits your background. Elements of AI, Jio AI Classroom and NPTEL learning are free. AI for Everyone and Google AI Essentials are free to try, but their certificates are paid. Take Elements of AI if you have never programmed, AI for Everyone for the business view, Google AI Essentials for practical prompt writing, and Jio AI Classroom for hands-on practice in your own language.
| Course | Cost | What you get | Coding needed |
|---|---|---|---|
Elements of AI (University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn) | Free | In 40+ languages; certificate on completion | Part 1 needs no complicated maths or programming; Part 2 recommends basic Python |
| Free | Four modules, each with videos, quizzes and a project; module quizzes unlock the next module; practice with ChatGPT, Gemini and Adobe Express; 12 languages; laptop or desktop only | Aimed at students and beginners | |
NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) on SWAYAM, the government's online learning platform; courses run by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) | Free to learn; optional proctored (supervised) exam at ₹1,000 per course | Varies by course | Varies by course |
AI for Everyone (Andrew Ng, on Coursera) | Free trial or a full course without a certificate; graded assignments and the certificate need the paid Certificate option (check the rupee price on the enrolment page) | 7 hours in four modules: what AI is (2 hours), building AI projects (1), AI in your company (2), AI and society (2); 27 languages | Largely non-technical |
| 7-day free trial, then billed monthly (check the rupee price on the enrolment page) | Under 5 hours in five modules covering prompts, productivity and responsible use; certificate | No technical experience required |
Jio's official certificate goes to learners who complete the course on JioPC (a Jio computing device accessed through a Jio set-top box). Other learners who complete it receive a completion acknowledgment.
Our recommendation, based on AI for Everyone's 7 hours and Google AI Essentials' under 5: plan about 12 hours over two weeks, and end with one small thing you built, such as a prompt-based routine for a task you already do.
What do paid beginner AI courses cost in India, and when is paying worth it?
Among the five provider pages in the table below, prices as shown in October 2026 ran from free to ₹2,84,995 plus 18% GST. The top figure is The Knowledge Academy's one-day instructor-led course, aimed at working professionals. Paying makes sense for what free courses do not give: live teaching at fixed hours, feedback on your work from a person, or a supervised exam.

| Provider page | Cost as shown (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Free | |
| Free | |
| Free to learn; optional exam ₹1,000 per course | |
| EMI (equated monthly instalment) starting at ₹11,585; 7-day money-back guarantee | |
| ₹2,84,995 excluding GST, for 1 day; GST is 18% |
The five rows are not like-for-like: two are free, one is an optional exam fee, one is an instalment headline and one is a full price.
Our worked example, using the Knowledge Academy listing: ₹2,84,995 × 1.18 = ₹3,36,294 (rounded to the nearest rupee). The GST alone adds about ₹51,299.
An instalment is not a price. Our model for the real cost is: instalment × number of months + any interest, processing fee or GST. Ask for that total, and run it through our coaching-fee comparison calculator to compare providers on the same footing.
We recommend paying only after you have finished a free course and know you want structure, deadlines and review. A beginner who has not yet tried a free course is rarely helped by a first purchase at the top of this range.
Can a paid AI course guarantee you a job?
No course can guarantee a job, and a placement promise in an advert is only as strong as the paper it is written on. On 16 September 2026 the Gurdaspur District Consumer Commission ordered an education firm to refund ₹84,960 for a six-month online course in artificial intelligence and product management that had advertised a 100% placement guarantee. It added ₹10,000 compensation and ₹5,000 costs, ₹99,960 in all (Law Trend).
As reported, the commission held that a provider advertising an unconditional employment assurance cannot later redefine it as "interview facilitation" without clear upfront disclosure, and that job alerts and screening calls do not fulfil a placement guarantee. That is one order, not a verdict on every provider. It shows that an advertised promise can be tested, and that the buyer who kept proof is better placed.
Screenshot the advert, and ask for the promise and its refund consequence to be written into the enrolment agreement. Our page on consumer-protection signals from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) about coaching centres covers the wider pattern.
We also recommend finishing any course with a project you can show. A certificate shows you attended; a project shows what you can do.
What should you get in writing before paying for an AI course?
Get eight answers in writing, by email or on the enrolment form, before paying. Each check below has a pass and a fail you can test, and a provider that resists putting an answer on paper has told you something.

- Is the total fee written in rupees, with GST and instalment costs?Pass: one written figure that includes GST and any interest or processing fee. Fail: only an instalment headline such as "EMI from ₹11,585", or a price "excluding GST".
- Is the refund window written down?
Pass: the form states what is refunded, from which date the days count, and how to claim. GUVI's page advertises a 7-day money-back guarantee, so the test is whether those terms appear on paper. Fail: a verbal assurance. Our guide to getting coaching refund terms in writing lists the wording to ask for.
- How many hours are live, and at what times?Pass: a timetable in Indian Standard Time (IST) that separates live hours from recordings. GUVI's page lists 120+ hours of interactive classes with weekday and weekend batches, which is the kind of claim to break down into live and recorded. Fail: "recorded access" with no live schedule.
- Which certificate or exam do you get, and is its code current?
Pass: the issuer and the current exam code are named. Microsoft retired exam AI-900 on 30 June 2026 and replaced it with AI-901; the English version of AI-901 was updated on 15 April 2026, and its passing score is 700. Fail: preparation for AI-900, which Microsoft has retired (see the AI-900 page on Microsoft Learn), or "Microsoft certified" with no code.
- What must you already know?Pass: stated prerequisites and a week-by-week syllabus. The AI-901 exam expects knowledge of Python coding syntax and familiarity with Azure resources, and Elements of AI Part 2 recommends basic Python. Fail: a "beginner" label with Python in week one and no Python lesson before it.
- Does the syllabus cover generative AI, and is it dated?Pass: a syllabus dated 2026 that names large language models (LLMs, the technology behind chatbots) and prompt writing. GUVI's page, for example, lists LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG, which lets a chatbot look up documents before answering) and AI agents. Fail: an undated syllabus.
- Is any placement or salary promise in the agreement?Pass: the promise appears in the signed agreement with what you receive if it is not met. Fail: it appears only in adverts. The Gurdaspur order in the placement section above turned on exactly this gap.
- Are there reviews outside the provider's own pages?
Pass: ratings and reviews from named learners on independent platforms, with the number of reviews shown. Fail: testimonials only on the provider's site. Our ten evidence checks for choosing a coaching institute extend this test to any institute.
How do we help you compare computer-training institutes before you enquire?
We help you compare institutes before you enquire, free for students. Online Coaching 4u is a directory of coaching institutes and training providers, and we publish this page as that directory. We do not teach courses or collect course payments. AI-specific course listings are limited today, so expect to compare mainly on the related computer courses institutes teach.
Here is how we work, so you can use the same method anywhere:
- Browse our computer-training listings by city, study mode (online, classroom or hybrid) and verification status. For the AI products students use day to day, our AI tools guide lists free and paid options.
- Open a profile to see its courses, location or availability, establishment year, ratings and reviews. Reviews from third-party sources are listed separately from those collected on our platform, and a Google rating is shown separately.
- Read "Verified" as confirmed details, not a guarantee of results. We review an institute's existence on trusted online sources, and the institute shares its details with us.
- Treat any promoted listing as paid placement. Promoted institutes are labelled as promoted.
- Send an enquiry (name, contact number and a message). Our privacy policy says we do not share your contact details with any institute other than the one you enquired about.
- Put the eight checks above to the institute, and confirm fees, batches, faculty, duration and refund terms with it directly.
On classroom versus online, we recommend paying for a classroom batch only if you will use in-person review and the travel is realistic. Otherwise choose a live online batch with an IST timetable.
